FLASH. BOOM. FIRE. Fire. Fuck that hurts. Bleeding. Cover. Get to cover. Mac rolled out of the bed and landed on the floor. She opened her eyes wide, straining to see in the darkness. She gulped air trying to take enough in. She low-crawled on her stomach and wedged herself under the bed. Cover. Don’t give away your position. Too loud. Slow your breathing. Danny. Danny. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. She covered her ears to shut out the sound of his screams. A light flashed bright in the darkness and Mac tried to wedge herself further under the bed.

“Mac?”

Lana. I’m safe. It’s not real. I’m safe. I’m safe. She uncovered her ears and rested her head on her hands. She worked to slow her breathing. Her chest ached.

“Mac?” Lana’s voice was closer now. Mac pushed herself out from under the edge of the bed and rolled over onto her back. She clasped her hands over her stomach.

Lana’s head appeared over the edge of the bed. She looked down and frowned at Mac. “Did you fall out of bed?”

“Rolled out. To take cover. I was dreaming.”

Lana’s gaze fixed on Mac’s eyes. “The same as the plane?”

“Yeah.” Mac got up off the floor and Lana moved back, giving her space in the bed. She lay down on her side and faced Lana.

“Is it because we talked about it? Or the rain?”

“Dunno. It happens. Sometimes it’s worse than others. I was on meds for a year after I came home. They helped with some of the other stuff but nothing stops the dreams.”

Lana reached out and cupped her cheek. “Did you hurt yourself?”

“No, but it’s hella dusty under your bed.” Falling back on humor to push away the pain, Mac grinned at Lana.

“I told you I’m a terrible housekeeper. Is there anything I can do?” She stroked Mac’s face with her fingertips. “To make it better?”

“No.” Mac leaned into Lana’s touch. “At least I didn’t drag you with me.”

“Have you done that?” Lana’s eyes were wide.

“Only twice. It makes for real short overnights if you’re dating.”

“Is it the reason you didn’t want to stay with me?” Lana’s brow furrowed.

“Part of it.” Mac used her thumb to smooth the lines on Lana’s forehead. “I’m sorry I woke you.”

Lana looked into Mac’s eyes. “It’s not a problem, cara. What will help you go back to sleep?”

What will help? Nothing. “I dunno. I’ve tried a bunch of stuff. I used to watch movies or old TV shows. Now I read or stay awake.”

“I’ll be right back.” Lana climbed over Mac and pressed a quick kiss to her lips. Mac heard Lana opening cabinets. She returned to the bedroom with a book. The binding was repaired with silver duct tape obscuring the title on the spine. She handed the book to Mac. Sitting up, Mac opened the book to the title page and read out loud. “How to weld and fabricate sheet metal.” Mac laughed. “What the hell are you doing with this? It’s even in English.”

Lana raised her eyebrow.
